The regular June CDC meeting features a presentation by Jason Shechtman, owner of a social club building at 51 Courtland Street, between Ring and Penn Streets.
In an email to WBNA CDC, Jason describes the development of the Courtland Club as "the revitalization of a social club building...and I believe a valuable step in the renewal of those blocks north of Broadway that have not experienced the same improvements as those that have emerged south of Broadway in recent years."
Jason explained that he has done extensive research on the history of the building and the social clubs that have owned and occupied it since the 1940s. He has "submitted an application to the City for a Class D Social Club liquor license, with aims to reopen the Club, but with a forward-thinking twist that steps away from the ethnic exclusivity or academic ties that characterize Providence's other clubs past and present."
Jason awaits a hearing date from the City, and has received a 501(C)7 non-profit designation from the IRS.
