36th Annual WBNA Spring Cleanup & Greenup

  • * Starts at WBNA Headquarters * 1560 Westminster Street Providence, RI, 02909 United States (map)

For 36 years, neighbors, friends, and families have come together for WBNA's Annual Spring Cleanup to make a huge and visible impact on neighborhood cleanliness and safety. This event is not only fun, it's a great way to get to know your neighbors!

This year features our 9am Cleanup and Green-up start time at WBNA with free breakfast treats, Build a Dragon Workshop and Panel Prototype Pop-Up at Dexter Training Ground (9:30-11:30am), and our annual free cookout for all Cleanup Day volunteers at noon! Details below.

HOW IT WORKS

Meet up at WBNA at 9am, grab a coffee and pastry, then join with street captains and a team of neighbors to clean YOUR street. Get rid of that abandoned mattress, attack that debris-strewn lot, or weed and clean some tree pits! Be prepared for dirt, and bring gloves and tools if you have them (rakes, square shovels, brooms) – if you don’t, you can borrow some of ours!

A long standing partnership with the City of Providence allows for trash pickups at designated locations as well as street sweeping on Cleanup Day. PLEASE NOTE: E-waste dropoff is NOT available this year. For information on how to dispose of electronic waste, please visit Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation.

After the work is done, come back to the WBNA and enjoy a FREE cookout with your fellow Cleanup Day volunteers.

CLEANUP AND GREENUP

If neighbors want to go beyond the basic cleanup to beautify their streets, or if your streets don’t require a big cleanup this year, we encourage you to add greening projects to your team’s Spring Cleanup plan. These efforts could include planting bulbs, giving some attention to our city street trees, or adopting a little corner of our neighborhood to do some guerrilla gardening.

Did you know that street trees are part of a stewardship program between the City and Providence residents? That means the tree outside your house, whether you own or rent, is technically yours to care for. Weeding and mulching is a great way to give your tree a great start to its growing season.

CLEANUP SCHEDULE

  • 9:00am / Meet at WBNA, enjoy breakfast items, form teams with street captains and other volunteers

  • 9:30am / CLEANUP! Street Teams set off from WBNA to designated cleanup areas

    • 9:30-11:30am / BUILD A DRAGON at Dexter Training Ground! Play with recycled materials to build a dragon-inspired structure, and vote on your favorite. This playful exploration is open to all ages, and will give us input on a permanent play structure that will be built this spring/summer

    • 9:30-11:30am / PANEL POP-UP at Dexter Training Ground! Check out sample signage of our neighborhood’s history and give feedback. Permanent signage will be installed at the park later this year

  • 12:00pm / Meet back at the WBNA for a cookout for volunteers

CLEANUP TIPS

  • Check with your street captain for designated trash pickup locations

  • Sweep sand, leaves and other debris into the street for street sweepers

  • Street sweepers come the day after the cleanup on Sunday, April 28

  • Please park off-street to facilitate complete street sweeping

  • Residents of Messer and Sycamore Streets, please sweep debris from behind the planter boxes into the street

  • As tempting as it might be, do not put gravel, rocks, or sand into garbage bags, or otherwise overload garbage bags. It causes the bags to break and then our efforts are undone!
